Virtually unknown to high schoolers, requires only a 2-year master's degree post-college, and commands six-figure pay right out of school without medical residency.
Clinical Role Overview
When a cardiac surgeon needs to repair a heart valve or perform a bypass, the heart must be completely still and bloodless. The perfusionist diverts blood from the body, artificially oxygenates and scrubs CO2, cools/warms body temperature, and pumps blood back into the aorta to sustain brain and kidney life.
A Day in the Life (Hospital Shift Chronology)
06:30 - Pre-operative prime and calibration of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) console and gas blender
07:45 - Patient heparinization; monitoring Activated Clotting Time (ACT > 400 sec)
08:30 - Initiating full bypass: stopping natural heart rhythm with cold cardioplegia solution
10:15 - Maintaining mean arterial pressure (65-85 mmHg) and hematocrit during complex aortic valve repair
11:30 - Controlled patient re-warming, weaning off bypass, and reversing heparin with protamine
